“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” Proverbs 14:12
Scripture Focus: Proverbs 14
Out of desperation, a man with leprosy had the courage to approach Jesus to be healed. The man knew Jesus could heal him, but would Jesus see such an outcast as worthy of healing? Yes! Jesus not only healed him, but He also touched him. The touch wasn’t necessary for healing; it was to show His compassion and authority. Jesus touched an untouchable, and changed the leper’s life.
After this miracle, Jesus strongly warned the man to remain silent. We’d expect, in his changed life, he would willingly obey. But in direct disobedience, the man left and shared his story widely. Perhaps his joy was more than he could contain. Or maybe he just wanted to point others to Jesus. Still the fact remains: he disobeyed.
This story makes me wonder how often I go ahead and do something for God, even when it’s not His way. Maybe I think I’m doing God a favor, but I’m really running ahead and not listening to His call and timing. There is joy when I trust and obey what He says. Lord, whatever you ask, give us wisdom and courage to obey.
Insight: “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way/ to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” (John H. Sammis, 1887)
