“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12
Scripture Focus: Exodus 20
Sam hung up the phone, frustrated. He thought being at college meant more independence. His dad simply wanted to know about his classes, but Sam was bothered by the daily calls. He decided not to answer them for the next two weeks. What is your response to this?
If you are younger, you may relate to Sam. But if you’re older and perhaps even have lost a parent, you’d probably give anything to be in Sam’s shoes, able to hear your dad’s voice again. We often do not realize the blessing of parents, and we don’t always find joy in them. Yet God provides parents for our good. Still, no earthly parent is perfect.
For all the wiping of noses, the enduring of children’s fits, the working to provide what is needed and beyond, and the laying aside of dreams for the sake of the kids, every parent’s efforts fall short. Every parent, that is, except for our heavenly Father. He sent His Son to us as a man who “for the joy set before him endured the cross” (Hebrews 12:2). Don’t forget that the “joy set before him” was you!
Insight: If you’re able, reach out to your parents today. And reach out to your heavenly Father, too, because He loves you more than anyone could.
