“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16
Scripture Focus: Colossians 3
After a stressful day at work, you pack up, exit the office, walk across the parking lot, and get into your car. What’s the first thing you do? Chances are you turn on the radio. Music is powerful. The right song can reduce stress and have us singing in no time. We use music to celebrate, to learn, to mourn, to soothe, and to entertain.
Have you ever considered that music, a language spoken the whole world over, was God’s idea? He gave it to us for our enjoyment and His glory. The Bible itself is filled with so many references to music that it is hard to count them all. Some figure music is mentioned 1,150 times or more in Scripture. There we find the words to songs God’s people sang in triumph and joy, in agony and desperation.
We’re given the lyrics of songs the saints will sing in heaven. Clearly, God delights in music. We not only have a Savior who rescues us from our sin, but He also gives us music to refresh the soul. “Sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our Salvation” (Psalm 95:1).
INSIGHT: “Music is one of the fairest and most glorious gifts of God, it removes from the heart the weight of sorrow.” (Martin Luther, 1483-1546)
