“The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. ” Genesis 2:15
Scripture Focus: Genesis 2
When our six-year-old daughter began first grade, I saw a difference in her compared to her kindergarten year. She grudgingly got up in the morning and dragged her feet to the breakfast table. After some prodding, she shared that in first grade there is a lot more work to do and a lot less playing. Have you ever felt that same attitude towards your work?
Scripture has a much more positive view of work. It is not a result of the Fall. Before sin even entered the world, God put Adam in the Garden to work, and he declared that this was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). God gave each of us gifts to create things, manage people, haul items, bandage wounds, care for children, play music, and so on. Work is actually an outworking of your being made in God’s image. Yes, work is hard and sometimes frustrating. But it is also an avenue of joy and blessing. By it God provides for us and we can bless others.
By it we use our talents while God trains us in patience and perseverance. Friends, be joyful that Jesus’ promise, “I will never leave nor forsake you,” applies to your work also.
Insight: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” (Colossians 3:23)
