    Jesus, Living Water

“Jesus answered her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4:10

    Scripture Focus: John 4

We are all tempted at one time or another to “drink” from wells that can never quench our thirst. We seek success, wealth, approval, popularity, or ––as with the woman at the well–– romantic love. Like her, we will discover momentary happiness, not lasting joy. Only Jesus can provide that.

Only the Living Water permanently quenches our thirst. Jesus told the woman, “If you knew, you would ask, and he would give.” If we too will know Him and will ask of Him, He will give. The Lord knows our deep thirsts, and He is faithful to satisfy. Jesus goes on to say, “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst” (vs. 14). The words I give stand out to me. With all other “wells,” we must draw, take, and pursue.

Jesus offers Himself freely to us. He invites us to rest in His grace. Jesus gently led the Samaritan woman to admit her great need. He already knew of her sin, but didn’t scorn her. He loved her anyway. If we will admit our need and trust His provision, our thirst will be satisfied. We’ll be drenched in His perfect love.

Insight: “Am I not enough mine own? Enough, mine own, for thee? All shalt thou find at last, only in Me.” (Amy Carmichael, 1955)
