God’s Simplicity, Pt. 2

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

Scripture Focus: Hebrews 6:13-20

Our promises are unreliable. We say, “I’ll see you at 11:00” or “I’ll drop the kids off tomorrow,” and then we forget, show up late, or cancel. Our word isn’t very good because we’re not very good. No wonder so many of us struggle just to keep appointments, let alone keep the high standard of faithfulness we’re called to in our marriages, friendships, parenting, and work relationships. When we look closely at ourselves, we find the problem is our self-conflicted nature, our sinful hearts.

The good news of God’s simplicity is that since there is no sin in Him and since His attributes are never conflicted, His promises to be gracious to us are certain (as today’s Hebrews 6 reading tells us). In Jesus, God has gone “all in” to save you. There is no part of Him that second guesses the love He has for you.

This is why He has not only given a firm promise in the gospel to forgive us and grant us eternal life, but He also has sworn “by himself ” (vs. 13) to show us the absolute certainty of the promise. It’s that simple!

Insight: Standing on the promises of God our King…





It is our hopes and prayers that these devotions will bring people to Jesus as Savior and have a deeper meaningful relationship with the Lord.

GOD’S WARNING

Sounds like the days we are living in today!

Recently I have been studying the Book of Jeremiah.  My heart has been stirred as I sense the burden of this devout, young, sensitive prophet, and read again his fearless warning to a faithless, idolatrous and wayward nation.  My tears were mingled with the weeping prophet’s as he pleaded with an apathetic people.  My heart ached because I saw a striking parallel between the erring nation of Judah and our own beloved country.  

Jeremiah prophesied to a people with a glorious heritage.  Their history was the wonder of the world.  Under God they had broken the bonds of Pharaoh.  They had risen to be one of the major world powers, and the nations of the earth had honored them for their skills and their prowess.  They boasted such names as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David and Solomon.  They produced great poets, kinds, judges and musicians.  Their architects, their masons and their silversmiths were among the greatest in the world.  They had given the existing nations codes of living and statutes of law that have never been excelled to this day.  

And when Jeremiah preached in the streets of Jerusalem, the nation was experiencing a great era of prosperity.  Gold flowed freely in the marketplace.  Tributes swelled the governmental coffers.  Silver was brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz.  

God does not judge people by a monetary standard.  He weighs them upon the scales of justice and integrity.  He looks deep into their hearts for underlying motives, for proper attitudes and inner purity.  Judah’s outward prosperity was merely a  thin, gilded coat hiding her inner depravity and poverty.  Her outward show of strength was a mask that camouflaged her spirit of weakness and shame.  Religiously she had become apostate; militarily she was vulnerable; morally she was destroying herself with her lust and her greed.  Yet this nation felt smug, complacent, self-satisfied.

Do you see the parallel between Judah then and our country now?  We have a glorious heritage in America - the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock; Washington at Valley Forge on his knees; our Founding Fathers on their knees at the first Continental Congress; the gaunt Lincoln praying in an hour of crisis; the great historical awakenings that marked the spiritual life of our nation.  All these are part and parcel of our great American heritage. 

We have grown to a first-rate power among the world’s family of nations.  Our skills, our prowess and our know-how are the envy of the world.  We are drunk with prosperity.  Did ever so many in the history of the world have so much?

Yet our prosperity has not brought the things we need most.  Man needs security, but in spite of our money we are more insecure than ever.  Man needs inner peace, but our money has not brought peace of heart and mind.  Man longs for freedom from fear, but in spite of our prosperity fear stalks the earth.  Man longs for accord with God, but to millions God is far away.  The words of James are appropriate for these times, 

“Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your
Miseries that are coming upon you!”
James 5:1

Jeremiah’s message to Judah befits these times in which we live.  The truth that he uttered goes straight to the core of our needs today.  When God called him, He said,

“Before you were born I sanctified you; 
I ordained you a prophet to the nations”
Jeremiah 1:5

And this weeping, compassionate prophet, crushed by the godlessness of a renegade world, is still pleading through the pages of Holy Scripture for repentance and a RETURN to a merciful and forgiving God. 

History is recorded so that we may avoid the errors of the past.  Judah fell and was led into Babylonian captivity because she ignored the voice of history as well as the voice of Jeremiah the prophet who was speaking, “Thus saith the Lord.”  Today we are in the precise position of Judah in Jeremiah’s day.  If we turn a deaf ear to Almighty god and shut our eyes to the truths of history, disaster is in store for us it was for them. 

The only alternative to destruction is repentance.  That was true then, and it is true now.  God spoke through the lips of Jeremiah saying,

“But if they do not obey,
I will utterly pluck up
And destroy that nation”
Jeremiah 12:17

What would Jeremiah say to us?  First, he would say something about our idolatry.  The Word of God thunders forth as it did through the lips of Jeremiah,

“According to the number of your
Cities are your gods,
O Judah”
Jeremiah 2:28

What a picture of America today - worshiping other gods while giving lip service to the true and the living God!  I tell you, God is sick of it!  I tell you that our false pretenses and our hypocrisy is a stench in the nostrils of God.

Of course, most people are not conscious idolaters, but they are bowed down to the god of pleasure.  Others, whose “Bible” is the stock market report, are bowed down to the god of gold.  Still others engage in what may be called self-worship - they are all wrapped up in themselves. 

Jeremiah had a word for these idolaters.  He said, 

“Cursed is the man who trusts in man
And makes flesh his strength,
Whose heart departs from the Lord.
For he shall be like a shrub in the desert,
And shall not see when good comes”
Jeremiah 17:5-6

Wherever your chief interest is, that is where your god is.  Whatever you love most, be it sports, pleasure, business or God, that is your god!

Second, I think Jeremiah would say something about entangling alliances.  Jeremiah scourged his nation for making entangling alliances with godless nations.

“Now why take the road to Egypt. . .
Or why take the road to Assyria,
To drink the waters of the River?
Your own wickedness will correct you,
And your backsliding will rebuke you.
Jeremiah 2:18-19

Egypt and Assyria were enemies of Judah, and yet her leaders sought to buy favor with gold and tribute.  Instead of Israel strengthening her spiritual fortification, she sought to buy friendship with enemy nations with gold.  Today we are in danger of doing the same thing.   We’ve gone all over the world trying to buy friendships, but our policy has failed.

Third, I think Jeremiah would say something about our moral degeneration.  Jeremiah minced no words about his nation’s moral corruption.  He knew that God abhorred lust and moral filth.  He said, 

“When I had fed them to the full, then they
Committed adultery and assembled themselves
By troops in the harlot’s houses.  They were like
Well-fed lusty stallions; every one neighed after
His neighbor’s wife.  Shall I not punish them for 
These things?  Says the Lord.  ‘And shall I not
Avenge Myself on such a nation as this?”
Jeremiah 5:7-9). 

Today our literature, films and our everyday lives are riddled with sexual filth.  Obscenity and profanity are everywhere.  We have fallen down before the god Aphrodite, and the seventh commandment has been shattered into a thousand pieces - immorality among rich and poor, perversion upon the educated and the illiterate, divorce rates climbing annually, homes collapsing because of the unfaithfulness of husband or wife, children running the streets as sheep with no shepherd.

These are the products of moral declination.  And above the din can be heard the voice of God’s judgment.

“Shall I not punish them for these things?
Says the Lord.  “Shall I not avenge Myself
On such a nation as this?”
Jeremiah 5:29

Fourth, I think Jeremiah would speak about our spiritual apostasy.  There were priests in Jeremiah’s day - plenty of them.  But Jeremiah stood at the temple entrance and cried, 

“An astonishing and horrible thing has been
Committed in the land:
The prophets prophecy falsely, 
And the priests rule by their own power;
And My people love to have it so.
But what will you do in the end?”
Jeremiah 5:30-31

The error that Judah’s false prophets made was in telling the people that all was well, and that God would not judge them for their evils.

“They have lied about the Lord,
And said, ‘It is not He. 
Neither will evil come upon us,
Nor shall we see sword or famine’”
Jeremiah 5:12)

They said, 
“Peace, Peace!
When there is no peace”
Jeremiah 6:14

The preaching of judgment has never been popular.  For Jeremiah’s boldness they threw him in prison, but when they released him he continued with renewed vigor and passion.  He didn’t do it just to be antagonistic.  God’s Word was like a fire in his bones, he said.  He could see the hand of God’s judgment, and he warned the people to flee from the wrath to come.

I believe that unless America repents, God will judge her.  I believe that judgment in sear. Judah was judged by the unholy, ungodly nation of Assyria.  God used the wrath of men  to work out His purpose with His people.  There is no reason to believe that He will not let the ax of judgment fall on our heads if we, like Judah, refuse to repent of our sins and turn to His Son, Jesus Christ.

Fifth, if Jeremiah were here today, I believe he would talk about the lost sense of sin in America.  The people of Judah had forgotten what sin was.  The word sin was seldom mentioned in the temple.  The priests spoke soft phrases to the people, but they were never challenged to face up to the evil of their hearts and repent. 

Hasn’t the word sin become almost taboo in America?  And as a result, haven’t we all but forgotten the meaning of it?  Many burdened ministers have told me with tears that their people seem to have forgotten what sin is, and that many of their members have become embroiled in the most grievous sins imaginable.  They are distressed and concerned that their people have ignored the fact of sin and its consequences.

The Bible says, 

“Behold, I will bring you to judgment for saying,
‘I have not sinned.’ How lightly you gad about,
Changing your way!  You shall be put to shame”
Jeremiah 2:35-36

My friends, the Bible says, 

“The wages of sin is death”
Romans 6:23

That is just as true today as it was in Jeremiah’s day.  You cannot break God’s laws and get away with it.  

“The soul who sins shall die”
Ezekiel 18:4

God is saying today to individuals and nations,

“Today, if you hear His voice,
Do not Harden your hearts”
Hebrew 3:15

“How shall we escape if we neglect
So great a salvation?”
Hebrews 2:3

I ask you today to give your life to Jesus Christ.  If you have never come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, repent of your sins right now.  Receive Him, and the same Christ who changed lives 2,000 years ago can change your life at this moment, and you can start in a new direction.

Faithfulness Fruit

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."   

Scripture Focus: Galatians 5:22-23

Our heavenly Father has demonstrated faithfulness to us and then called us to live in faithfulness. This is not about compulsion of the law. When we have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, the result is fruit, evidence of His presence and work in us. Paul wanted the believers at Galatia to understand and experience the freedom Christ purchased for them. He warned them that the goal of Christ-likeness was not obtained by human effort, but by the glorious mystery of the indwelling Christ. 

Even after many years on my journey of faith, I still need this message. I'm one of those people who find acceptance and affirmation by helping, working, and serving. But I have to be watchful when pride and self-righteousness slip into my heart. I need to listen to the Spirit whispering, "What do you have that you have not received?" The fruit that I bear is a testimony to God's faithfulness to me, not a testimony to my usefulness to others. My righteousness is as filthy rags, but I have been born anew and am a new creation in Jesus.

Insight: "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare [his] praises...." (1 Peter 2:9)

The Gift of Tomorrow

A few times in my life I have had the opportunity to awaken to freshly fallen snow. The little boy in me still enjoys making that first set of footprints in the perfect, white wonderland. It's like a blank canvas I claim to create on however I choose. The New Year is a bit like that. The freshness God gives us as each year rolls around is exciting. What do we want to do differently, better, more of? 

It's as if all the regrets, failures, and griefs of 2019 will be covered in a blanket of pure white so we can start over come tomorrow morning. People around the world will be ringing in the New Year with parties, champagne, and kisses at midnight. Let's bring it in with the acknowledgement that this year belongs to God. Daily let’s equip ourselves to be who He has called us to be. Our time on this earth may vanish in 2020, so let's run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2). Swing open wide the front door and run out into the freshly fallen snow to tread where God takes you.

Insight: Lord, the year ahead is a gift from You. Nothing that happens in it will surprise You. Prepare us to honor You to the fullest! Amen

Gift of Reflection

"Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on."   

Scripture Focus: Philippians 3:13

Something feels significant about ending a year and embarking on a new one. It has that feeling of crossing a finish line, of completing a degree, of reaching the top. Yet at the same time we know clearly there are more races to run and more mountains to climb. Reflect back on what this past year has held. Have you been changed and shaped in some way by all that has transpired? Did you tackle the impossible? Did you make a difference at all? Did you give up too soon? When we start to inventory the year, it becomes evident for many of us that we didn't change the world. 

Things may have remained pretty much status quo. There is much we can learn by reflecting on our shortcomings. Our mistakes teach us a lot. God is refining us. What looks like the crumbs or broken remains of our failures is the very stuff God uses. From the beginning of time, He has been making something out of nothing. He will surely do the same with the year that is behind you. Now watch and see what He has in store for the year ahead!

Insight: Father, thank You for another year of serving You. Continue to sharpen me for Your kingdom and Your purpose. Amen

The Gift of Plugging In

"And I pray that you, may have power, to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."  

Scripture Focus: Ephesians 3:17b-19

Power runs mightily through an extension cord, if it is plugged in. It's of very little use, though, without the power source. When you plug the cord into a power source on one side, power comes out the other side. You might think of our life in Christ in these terms. You and I were created to be plugged into God, our power source. Only when we're plugged into Him do we release purpose and His power into those around us. 

Each day we plug into Him and then pour His power, love, grace, forgiveness, freedom, and encouragement into others. If we don't utilize the source of power God has freely given us, we are wasting His birth, His life, His death, and His resurrection. How can you plug into God more today? Take time to pray, to read His Word, to extend yourself to those around you, and to feel the powerful presence of Jesus coursing through you. That power will make known to you how "wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ" (vs. 18). With that power surging through, you'll light up each day for Jesus.

Insight: Jesus, You are my source of power and of all things good. Let your love flow through me and into the lives of others today. Amen

Increasing Faith

"[Jesus] replied, If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it will obey you." Luke 17:6 

Scripture Focus: James 1:2-18  

As Christians, our faith in Jesus is our foundation (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is how we are justified or made right with God (Romans 3:28). Faith is so powerful it can move mountains (Matthew 21:21) or plant an uprooted tree in the sea (Luke 17:6). We know that without faith we cannot please God (Hebrews 11:6), and whatever is done without faith is sin (Romans 14:23). So of course we would like God to increase our faith. 

But few things increase our faith like suffering, and none of us longs for that. We find ourselves begging as the disciples did, "Increase our faith!" (Luke 17:5) Pastor and author John Piper says, "One of the primary purposes of being shaken by suffering is to make our faith unshakable." He explains how this happens. "Faith is like a muscle tissue; if you stress it to the limit, it gets stronger." However, as I know, having your faith pushed to the limits is difficult and cannot be faced without God's strength. 

Turn to Jesus in your pain, and let the hardships of your life cause your faith to increase.

Insight: When our faith is tested, we can pray like the father of the demon-possessed boy, "I do believe. Help me overcome my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24)

"Praise be to, God, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received."   

Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

A widow can understand the challenges of another woman whose husband has recently passed away. Someone who has lost a loved one to a long battle with cancer knows the difficulties of another family facing that terrible disease. Since my stroke, I have seen my wife, who herself has suffered, encourage spouses and caregivers of traumatic brain injury survivors-once after seeing a stroke survivor attempting to walk along the edge of a busy road. 

Throughout our journey of loss, my children also have been a blessing to others experiencing suffering of many kinds. It turns out that often the agonies we have faced are the prerequisites to our helping someone else in their suffering. Have you felt that nothing good could come from your suffering? Have you felt alone in your pit of despair? Paul directs us to the truth that as God helps us through our darkest times, He is uniquely equipping us to help fellow sufferers. 

God is teaching you. Your suffering is the prerequisite you need so that you can minister to others.

Insight: You can trust Him as your education in the school of suffering drags on because Jesus has passed the final test for you!

Scripture Focus: Matthew 19:13-15

To conclude this month's meditations on Psalm 23, let's read a version of the psalm written especially for children. Jesus beckoned the little children to come to Him. Read through the psalm with the ordinary, unadorned faith of a child, and let the simple words of comfort speak deeply to you. “The Lord is my Shepherd. And I am his little lamb. He feeds me. He guides me. He looks after me. 

I have everything I need. Inside, my heart is very quiet. As quiet as lying still in soft green grass in a meadow by a little stream. Even when I walk through the dark, scary, lonely places, I won't be afraid. Because my Shepherd knows where I am. He is here with me. He keeps me safe. He rescues me. He makes me strong and brave. He is getting wonderful things ready for me. Especially for me. Everything I ever dreamed of ! He fills my heart so full of happiness I can't hold it all inside. 

Wherever I go I know God's never stopping never giving up, unbreaking, always and forever love will go, too!" (Sally Lloyd-Jones, 2007, Zonderkidz)

Insight: "Forever" is a long time. There is none other but my Lord with whom I should ever desire to spend eternity!

Will Follow Me

"Surely goodness and love will follow me," Psalm 23:6a   

Scripture Focus: Psalm 18:1-19

The word "pursue" would be a better translation than the word "follow" in the passage above. Often David was being chased down by his enemies. He must have written with great relief about the reality that the greater thing he was pursued by was God's love. How wonderful to be pursued relentlessly by the Shepherd-King who came with goodness and unfailing love! Images may come to mind of the loving, dogged pursuit of one person for another. 

You think of parents coming after their grown child again and again to pull him out of the grip of drug or alcohol addictions; you think of the teacher who keeps pushing the wayward student to do the work; you think of the woman chasing after her friend who is headed down the path of destruction yet another time. Perhaps you have been the one pursing another, or perhaps you were the one being chased down. If you were the latter, you may not have wanted the help at all. 

God knows what is best for you, and He already went to the cross for you to fight off Satan, evil, and death.

Insight: Our heavenly Father does more than just follow us; He has pursued us and saved us!

Scripture Focus: Psalm 126: 2-3

Continuing the story of David's returning of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem from yesterday's devotional, we read that in time the processional with the precious ark resumed. This time not only was there enthusiasm and joy, there also was sacrificing and prayer nearly each step of the way. There was singing and shouting and sounding of trumpets until the ark was placed in the tabernacle David had set up for it. 

As David approached the city, his wife Michal observed him through an upper window, and she despised his exulting joy. Her first words to him upon his return were of sharp criticism (see 2 Samuel 6:20). But his response was sincere and single-minded: "I will celebrate before the LORD" (v. 21). He let her know he was accountable to the Lord alone, and he intended to give every ounce of his being in elated delight over the Lord's blessings. David's heart simply overflowed with gladness in his Savior. 

Does your cup overflow with your delight in how He has loved you, redeemed you, and made you His own?

Insight: "Fill my cup, Lord;/ I lift it up, Lord;/ Come and quench this thirsting of my soul." (Richard Blanchard, 1959)

For You Are With Me

"You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance." Psalm 32:7 

Scripture Focus: Mark 6:32-34  

What a comforting thought! I am never alone, for He is with me, surrounding me with songs-like a mother singing a lullaby to a child or like a shepherd humming a calming song to the flock. In ancient Israel a flock was never unattended. The shepherd, often the owner or the one having at least part ownership, stayed with the sheep and cared for them. A hireling, after all, might not be entirely trustworthy since the sheep didn't belong to him. 

But as the protector of and provider for the flock, the owner-shepherd faithfully, committedly cared for his sheep. One day Jesus saw the multitudes of people on a mountainside before Him. Through His owner- shepherd's eyes, He saw them growing weary and scattering as shepherdless sheep. He was moved with compassion, feeling immediate love for them because He not only was leading them, but He also "owned" them. Your Shepherd and heavenly Father is filled with compassion for you, too. 

He feeds you, guards you, and guides you. He purchased you with His life and will be with you always.

Insight: "As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him." (Psalm 103:13)

For His Name's Sake

"And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end." Isaiah 9:6b-7a  

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 9:6-7

It has been said often that God does not need to defend His name. True. But God is jealous of how His name is used on earth. Consider the beauty, the honor, and the majesty of the name God gave His Son. He receives titles of utmost honor. God wants us all to attribute to Him the worship and esteem befitting so exalted a name. It is a truly overwhelming thought that He whose very name is Mighty God became a servant in a world of sinners, humbled Himself, and obediently faced death on a cross. 

One day everyone on earth will drop down on bended knee in reverence at the mention of His great name, confessing Him as Lord of all. He saves us "for his name's sake to make his mighty power known" (Psalm 106:8). His name won't be cheapened by using it to swear or to call out inanely, "Oh, my God!" We sin against our Lord when we denigrate His name and when we walk in paths other than the righteous ones He has planned for us. 

May your daily walk with Him and the way you choose to use His name bring glory and praise to Him!

Insight: "Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name's sake." (Psalm 79:9)

I suspect that all of us have felt so accused at one time or another. The prophet Jeremiah once indicted the shepherds of the Lord's flock for failure and for bearing the responsibility of scattering the people. 

But he also promised fruitfulness and increase, freedom from fear and want. How would God accomplish this? Not difficult at all for Him! It is a discouraging prospect, indeed, if all depends on us and our righteousness. How could we ever gain God's kingdom on the merits of our own unworthy efforts? The little voice whispering, You'll never measure up, sounds convicting. Praise God that He who is our righteous Branch and King at the same time is certain to answer our failure with His own perfect record on our behalf. 

Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, will lead you in all the paths of righteousness because of Himself.

Insight: If you "feel" Him "leading" down a path pointing to destruction, that is not the leading of Jesus. Run the other way!

Beside the Still Waters

"When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone away from the well's mouth and water the sheep. Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well." Genesis 29:3  

Scripture Focus: Genesis 29:1-14

The shepherd was always thinking of the care of his sheep-especially for water to quench his flock's thirst. Many ancient wells were kept carefully sealed by their owners until high noon, the hour of watering. When the stone was removed, those entitled to the water could approach the well. A crowd had gathered at the well in Paddan Aram when Jacob arrived. He was just inquiring for his uncle when the beautiful shepherdess Rachel came to water her sheep. 

Jacob was smitten by her, and later she would indeed become his wife. He had found the love of his life at the well. Praise be to our God that the well of salvation is never sealed for us. We need not wait till "high noon" to approach Him and drink deeply of His compassion and forgiveness. "With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you" (Isaiah 12:3, 6). Jesus, our life-giving water, freely gives to all His flock, His chosen ones. In Him you will find true satisfaction for your life's thirst. Seek Him today!

Insight: Come to Jesus and find the treasure of your life. There will never be greater comfort than alongside the still waters where He leads.

In Green Pastures

"Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass." Mark 6:3 

Scripture Focus: Psalm 25:4-10  

Until I was twelve, I lived on a small farm along the Dry Fork creek, 8 miles north of Salem Missouri. We loved to sit on the front porch in the evening, hear stories, and eat a bite or two of food. We tended Cattle, sometimes they would be lying close around the fences. When grazing was sparse, we led them to better pastures. 

The shepherds of ancient Israel often contended with one another for the best grazing land. David's psalm references green pastures because that's what a shepherd was looking for a place that would bring sustenance and comfort to his flock. David's words help us think of God, our Shepherd, as doing something similar for us. Generations after David wrote the "Shepherd's Psalm," the Good Shepherd Himself went out to a hillside, and thousands flocked around Him. 

He had them sit down in the green grass so He could not only feed them that day, but also could impress upon them that He was the Bread of Life, the very nourishment their souls were looking for.

Insight: If you are to have the strength for life's rugged journey, come to the green pastures of God's sustaining Word. Feed from it daily!

A Still, Quiet Soul

"I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me." Psalm 131:2   

Scripture Focus: Psalm 131

We live in a frantic, demanding world. Our souls are continually stirred up with desire, ambition, and needs- some real, some false, some good, some bad. We spin, run, tumble, fall, push, pull, scroll, and swipe just to get through each day. Though our souls can barely keep up, we often push them on-through the depression, through the guilt, through the constant conflicts with family members, friends, and God. We hope that if we reach hard enough and grab the next best thing, peace will finally settle in. 

But what if peace is not found in moving forward, but by pausing right where you are? What if you stopped reaching for something more, different, or better and simply put your hope in God? If you learned to trust God like a weaned child trusts its mother, you would find peace. Instead of crying, complaining, and groping for Him every time you are hungry, scared, or wet, simply wait on the Lord. We tend to think that peace is found in the things God gives. True peace is found in the God who gives them.

Insight: "May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all." (2 Thessalonians 3:16)

Delight of the Word

"How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" Psalm 119:103   

Scripture Focus: Psalm 119:97-104

Throughout the Psalms we read that there is delight in knowing God. "Sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant" (135:3). "In your name I will hope, for your name is good" (52:9). "As for God, his way is perfect" (18:30). When we come to Psalm 119, the longest of the psalms, we find many passages that speak of love for and awe of God's Word. In verse 103, God's Word is sweeter than honey in our mouth. 

Loving the Lord and loving His Word go hand in hand. How can it be, then, that often those who claim to love God care very little for His Word? If a man says he is in love with a woman yet treats her love letters as if they were junk mail, would you think his love was real? If we are to love God, we will love His Word. Though our love ebbs and flows, His love remains steadfast. Where our love changes daily, His is from everlasting to everlasting. 

That perfect love reached down when Jesus gave His life for us. This good news of the gospel is the sugar added to the entire Word of God. Taste and see that it is good!
